On June 4, 1948, the lyrics of the hymn “All Hail the Pow’r of Jesus’ Name” wafted in the air, signaling the beginning of Gospel broadcasts in the country. Then called KZAS, the first station of FEBC Philippines aired evangelistic as well as public service programs that met the needs of post-World War II Filipinos.
Through the years, the station (which has since then been changed to DZAS) has served alongside the Philippine church, complementing its evangelism and missionary endeavors. This has led hundreds of thousands of people to know Christ and accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior. Several churches have been established within communities of those who began their spiritual experience through listening to FEBC.
Today, 702 DZAS continues to air the Good News through a variety of program formats that include music, live counseling, news, public service, music, teaching, drama, among others. Through streaming, the broadcasts also strengthen Filipinos abroad, especially OFWs, who also use the programs to connect to home. It is the forerunner of interactive, talkback radio on AM, with programs such as “Heartline” and “Doctors on Line.”
In its 66-year history, the station, as well as several of its programs, has been recognized by various award-giving bodies. For a time, it was given a Golden Dove Award for “Best Noncommercial Station in Metro Manila” by the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas. But what it considers its trophy are the individuals, families, and communities that have been impacted by the broadcasts. Truly, 702 DZAS is “Agapay ng Sambayanan.”
